Cher, Scooby, and the Sargasso Sea! – Episode Review

The episode begins on Cher’s Yacht, where Scooby is trying out a beaded dress. Cher walks in with some frozen Hot Chocolate (and a mug of Frozen Vanilla for Scooby), and here we learn that Cher’s Yacht skims plastic out of the ocean as it sails, where the plastic is then converted into beads.

We also learn that it is Scooby’s Birthday! Unfortunately the boat’s Chef is MIA (a sharkman has scared him off) so Cher gets busy baking Scooby a new cake. An excited Scooby manages to knock all the plates off a shelf but Cher explains that it isn’t a party until everything gets broken.

Fred, Daphne and Velma are on the Bridge, where Fred is nerding out over the experience. The captain even lets him steer the ship, whereupon Fred exclaims it’s the best day ever.

After devouring a bowl of cake batter, Cher, Scooby and Shaggy head to the ship’s gym to work off the calories. Choosing to swim instead, Shaggy and Scooby’s relaxation time is ruined as Sharkman jumps out of the pool.

After a couple of chase scenes where Scooby, Shaggy and Cher disguise themselves as Fashion Gurus and another scene where the entire gang disguise themselves as wig mannequin heads.

Eventually, the yacht crashes into an old ship graveyard and Velma explains that they are in the Sargasso Sea. Here the seaweed is so thick and covers vast miles of the ocean. Legend also has it that the seaweed is carnivorous and is able to eat sea captains whole, leaving only the ship behind.

After an interlude with two ship scavengers, Daphne discovers that a sparkplug is missing, so the gang split up to look for clues. Cher, Scooby and Shaggy are off to find a cake instead of clues, but the sharkman has other plans and we soon discover that there are two sharkmen after Fred discovers a second one hiding in the Mystery Machine (as he was going to grab his toolbox).

Scary Shark Man

Locking themselves in a room, the gang don diving suites and head off to see the legendary ship called the S.S. Dolly. According to Velma the ship is full of treasure, but by the time they reach the sunken ship, the cargo hold is empty.

Back on the Yacht, the gang set a trap after Cher declares that it is trapping time. Scooby and Shaggy disguise themselves as mermaids to act as bait, and Cher’s beads cause the sharkmen to slip and fall into the Yacht’s pool where they are finally caught by Fred with a net.

Unmasking the Sharkmen (by Cher) it is revealed that they are 1) Captain Kirby and 2) First Mate Nash, who had been secretly exploring the Sargasso Sea for the S.S. Dolly and its legendary cargo of gold for years. After finally discovering it and in order to steal the gold they sabotaged Cher’s yacht and disguised themselves as Sharkmen to scare everyone away. The gold was then hidden in the cargo bay.

Cher decides the gold will be donated to an ocean charity, after Velma explains that they have salvage rights as the gold was found by Cher’s Yacht. We then end with Scooby blowing out the candle on his birthday cake and saying “Scooby-Birthday-Doo!”

My Score

sevenI give this episode a 7 out of 10. It’s a lot of fun and Cher makes for a great guest. I thought the Sharkmen looked pretty cool and were scary enough, while also giving us a lot of fun and creepy scenes on the boat, along with underwater. The humour in this one is pretty funny too, with the scavenging twins being one of the highlights. Plus, how can you not like an episode where it’s Scooby’s birthday!
