Scooby’s Trip to Ahz – Episode Review

The episode begins with the gang getting ready to watch the Wizard of Oz in the mystery machine. An excited Scooby who has gone to pick up some sandwiches from take out runs a little too fast and ends up knocking himself out after he trips.

At this point we are taken to the Scooby-Doo version of Oz after the Mystery Machine is whisked away by a Tornado. In this version Scooby is the cowardly Lion, while Scrappy is the Tin Man and Shaggy is the Scarecrow.

A yellow brick toad – that’s right – I said toad explains that the yellow brick road had been torn up and a shopping center had been put in. The toad is quite surly, but agrees to lead them to the wizard. The toad’s voice seems to be based on legendary comedian Jimmy Durante, which is paid tribute to a lot in cartoons.

We also meet a wicked witch of the North by South East, and at this point, the yellow brick toad splits.

In a poppy field, the gang are put under the spell of the witch and we get a funny flying scene as the gang fall asleep.

Wicked witch of the north by South East

The wicked witch sends off her flying monkey to seize the gang and bring them to the castle. Scooby is the first to wake up to see the witch followed by Scrappy and Shaggy. Scrappy tosses some water on the witch dissolving her.

The Wizard who was held captive allows the gang to escape with him in his hot air balloon. Unfortunately, the balloon can only hold 4 people, so Scooby ends up falling out of the balloon.

During his decent, Scooby wakes up in real time and realizes that everything was a dream, yet for some reason he still has a lion’s tail.

My Rating

four point fiveI give this episode a 4.5 out of 10.

I originally watched this episode when it aired in 1981 and have always remembered it. Particularly the yellow brick toad. I distinctly remember going to school on Monday and singing ‘follow the yellow brick toad’ with a lot of kids giving me questionable looks.
