Scooby-Doo and Cyclops, Too is the second half of the fifth episode of The New Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show and it originally aired on September 24th, 1983.
Written by Martin Warner & Tom Ruegger this episode is a play on the popular 70s show Fantasy Island.
Scooby-Doo and Cyclops, Too – Episode Review
The episode begins with the Mystery Machine driving to a paradise island, which I am assuming is around Hawaii. They are a bit lost, so they stop at “Barney Simons Service Station” which has the motto – Eat here and Get Gas. Clever joke Martin Warner & Tom Ruegger.
Barney is a jerk and has zero customer skill. He even screams when Daphne brings up Paradise Island. We learn visitors disappear there and even turn into zombies.
Checking in the hotel they meet Mr. Cyclops and his assistant Ivan. The hotel is empty, however Mr. Cyclops explains everyone went on a picnic. Daphne finds this odd as there is a lightening storm going on. Ivan also explains Barney tells everyone not to visit the hotel as he’s trying to force them out of business. Daphne oddly accepts this reasoning.
Scooby and Shaggy meet the maid who has a bit of a zombie persona so Shaggy tries to scram. Upon hearing that they saw a Zombie, however, Daphne wants to investigate further. Over by the pool Shaggy and Scooby run into a zombified Barney zombie, but Daphne and Scrappy want to chat to the man and head off looking for him.
We then cut to Barney creeping around and pretending to be a Zombie. Daphne doesn’t fall for the trick, and we discover Barney is looking for his sister Amy. She’s been missing for 3 weeks after a two day visit at the hotel.
At the hotel, Scooby is hypnotized by Mr. Cyclops and is told to bring his friends to the old mine. The Zombified Scooby scares the heck out of Shaggy, but the spell on Scooby doesn’t last very long and he’s returned to normal after Shaggy whistles.
Barney shows Daphne some railroad tracks leading into the mine and the entire group, along with Barney, head into the mines. Here they find several zombified town folks working in the mines. We discover Mr. Cyclops turns guests into Zombies for a few weeks to mine for uranium, then returns them to normal until new guests arrive that he can zombify.
Mr. Cyclops zombifies Barney and Scrappy, but Daphne is able to turn on the normalizing ray to turn everyone back to normal.
Scrappy also grabs Mr. Cyclops hypnotic crystal so everyone can escape and is arrested shortly after.
My Score
I give this one a 7.5 out of 10. It’s kind of creepy and spooky but it also has a high energy level too it that makes it fun. The two villains are fun, and the grouchy and screaming Barney is also quite funny. Daphne’s earnestness throughout this episode also cracks me up as she plays the straight woman and is unaffected by everything happening around her as I suppose she’s seen everything before.
I’m starting to enjoy this series even more as I’ve adapted to the 12 minute running time. While I do wish these ones were a little bit longer so we could get a spookier atmosphere, the quick pacing of this one made for an incredibly fun episode while still retaining a sense of mystery.
