The Scooby Coupe is the second half of the tenth episode of The New Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show and it originally aired on November 5th, 1983. With a story by Peter Anderegg, this episode features the gang at an auto show where they encounter a spooky ghost.
The Scooby Coupe – Episode Review
The episode begins with the gang at the Annual Auto Show. Scrappy is super excited for Dr. Sprocket’s unveiling of the new XYZ Sports Coupe. Meanwhile Shaggy and Scooby meet Ingrid Ignition, the owner of a futuristic car.
Daphne wants to interview Dr. Sprocket, however, he is too nervous as he has been receiving threats. It’s also at this point where we meet his assistant, Crocker Pitt.

The unveiling for the car is about to happen and as Dr. Sprocket is about to explain it we meet the Specter of Sport Cars who takes control of the car and slowly drives it into towards the audience. Scooby and Shaggy abandon Daphne and Scrappy and take off in a experimental rocket car that blasts them into the sky. Scooby hits the ejection button and they parachute down and meet up with Daphne and Scrappy again.
Scooby tries to get out of going back into the event by dressing up as his mom, however Daphne bribes him with a whole box of Scooby Snax. Back in the venue, Scrappy finds some top secret blueprints for the XYZ car. Mr. Pitt explains they had been stolen since yesterday.
The gang then split up to look for clues where Scooby and Shaggy are nearly crushed by a super futuristic garbage truck. Scooby finds a glove with the initials I.I. that shoots sparks. Daphne and Scrappy go another way and find a newspaper article that explains that Dr. Sprockets and Ingrid Ignition are rivals. They also run into the Specter who is missing a glove on one hand.
The Specter fires up the car and tries to run over Scrappy and Daphne but nearly runs over himself and also smashes the XYZ car. Daphne also discovers the car was remote controlled while Shaggy and Scooby show up and show Daphne the glove.
The Specter then shows up and grabs Shaggy and Daphne and runs off with them. Scooby takes chase in the robotic garbage truck and takes chase, trapping the Specter in the garbage truck’s bin.
Daphne unmasks the Specter and it’s revealed to be Crocket Pitt who wanted Dr. Sprocket to lose the contest so Crocket could take his secret plans and make the car himself.
My Review
I give this episode a 6.5 out of 10. The Specter of Sports Cars is a very cartoony name for a villain but this is such a fun episode! There’s a scene where Shaggy askes Scooby if he is licensed to drive and Scooby flashes his dog tag at him saying that he is. We also get a fun scene of Scooby cleaning the streets as he drives his futuristic garbage truck. I’d love to give this one more points, however, there is very little atmosphere as it’s mostly played for laughs and there is no spookiness which are three
