Wizards and Warlocks – Episode Review

The episode begins with the gang at the creepy Wizards and Warlocks castle where a convention is being held. Scrappy is dressed as a wizard and comes armed with his gamebook.

Wizards and Warlocks Castle

Confronted by a floating ogre head, Scooby and Shaggy are briefly separated from Daphne and Scrappy where they meet the tower wizard. Daphne asks the wizard where all the convention attendees are and the Wizard tells her to shut up. Scrappy declares himself the seeker and the Wizard disappears in a puff of smoke after proclaiming that the game has begun.

Tower Wizard

The gang are on a hunt for a golden key which Shaggy thinks he has found, instead he’s turned into a duck. Scrappy casts a spell to get the key safely, but they are soon attacked by some squidmets, or a swarm of bugs.

The gang make it to the second level, however chaos ensues as Scrappy and Daphne are turned invisible. Scooby and Shaggy run into some food where Scooby finds another key inside a cursed turkey leg.

Rhird Revel Rots of Ruck

At the third level Scrappy unlocks the wand room and Scrappy warns Scooby and Shaggy about the Yadzruck. The wand is also encased in glass, which Scrappy gets past with another spell from the rule book.

Yadzruck

We meet the Yadzruck which is some sort of spikey furred beast, however, Scrappy comes to the rescue and vanishes the Yadzruck. Scrappy also releases all the trapped convention attendees. The Tower Wizard then presents Scrappy a wand and declares Scrappy a grand master wizard of the gang.

My Thoughts

7 pawsI give this episode a 7 out of 10. It’s pretty good and a lot of fun. There is some clever play on words in one scene where Scooby reads a sign that I thought was so funny, as the majority of signs all over are a bit scrambled.

With such a creative entry, the only thing holding this back is the length of time. I only wish this could have been a full episode as I feel they could have done so much more with it. I also liked how this mirrored the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons craze of the early 80s making this episode very topical for the time.
