Alien Schmalien originally aired on November 27, 1982 and is the tenth episode of Scrappy & Yabba-Doo, which originally aired as the third part of the tenth episode of The Scooby & Scrappy Doo Puppy Hour. This episode is written by Gary Greenfield and sees the Gang encountering an Alien who accidentally crash landed on earth.
The movie ET was all the rage in 1982 (heck, I even saw it in the theatre – it was the 2nd movie I ever saw in one (the first being Raiders of the Lost Ark)). Although I never got caught up in the hype as I guess I leaned more towards scarier aliens.
Alien Schmalien – Episode Review
The episode begins with Dusty, Yabba and Scrappy looking into the sky with a telescope. Scrappy sees a UFO fly down and runs out to give a wild west welcome.
Meanwhile, Doctor Bleak and a strongman named Hugo from a travelling circus spot the UFO as well, and want to capture it for their travelling sideshow.
Scrappy finds the Alien first and welcomes to earth. The alien’s name is Zylon and he needs to get his spaceship fixed. Zylon must first convince Yabba and Dusty that he is real, and demonstrates his Alien powers.
Yabba and Dusty dress up Zylon to disguise him, and at first the plan works, but Zylon continues to use his alien powers to give himself away, and Dr. Bleak successfully kidnaps Zylon.
We get out typical shenanigans and hijinks as the Gang rescue Zylon before sending him back to outer space.
My Rating
I give this episode a 4 out of 10. I’m not a big fan of this one. Once again, it’s not horrible or anything, but boy do I never want to watch this one again. I’m not a huge fan of these Yabba/Dusty/Scrappy episodes. The alien did make this one a bit more interesting than normal, but not enough for me to really remember it.
